This document, the Bylaws-minimal, will follow a number of formatting conventions in order to make it easier to read and understand. These conventions may be changed at any point that the document is revised.

A term is anything that requires a strict definition—for example required jargon.
Terms are italicised, or when accompanied by a definition are italicised and underlined.
A placeholder is a made-up name for referencing something, e.g. [Person A] is a placeholder to reference some person in some situation.
Placeholders are in bold.
Section References
A section reference is a reference to a particular part of the document.
They take the form of a bolded hyperlink to the section, with a section mark (§) followed by the section's number and name.

Name & Type

The name of this organisation is temporary and shall, until made permanent, be [The ForkTogether Project]. This organisation is also temporarily non-legal, that-is is not established in any particular country as an official organisation. The procedures to change the name and type of this organisation are listed in § 7. Changing This Document.


The primary mission of [The ForkTogether Project] is to provide an excellent social network experience for the end user through:

  • Encouraging positive community engagement
  • Minimising harassment
  • Developing accessible software
  • Governing by and for its user community
  • Encouraging a diverse board and diverse user and development groups



Members of [The ForkTogether Project] are those who participate through coding, conversation, or caring. These criteria for participation are intended to foster inclusion, confidence, and constructive contributions, and should be lenient whenever possible. Members also have access to member resources as defined in § 4.1.1. Member Resources.

Members become voting members if they have attended at least two assemblies (§ 5. Assemblies), or have substantially contributed to a working group (§ 4.2. Working Groups). This will enable them to vote in the various procedures mentioned in this document.

Members are assumed to agree to the bylaws and Code of Conduct, and members which break any rules defined in either of these documents may have their membership revoked by either a board decision or a general vote.

Member Resources

Working Groups

Working groups are temporary, flexible groups of members formed to complete a particular goal. Once that goal is complete they are disbanded.

A Working group may be formed by the board, but can also be formed by members. Typically a working group will, when finished, report their results to the board and membership to help them make project-related decisions.

The Board

The board is responsible for executing decisions made during General Assemblies, as well as handling the ongoing operations of [The ForkTogether Project].

The board consists of a chairperson, a treasurer, a secretary, and between two and six other {{board members. If needed, a deputy chairperson can be appointed by the board from among its numbers. A single individual can not have two roles at once.


The chairperson and secretary are signatories for [The ForkTogether Project]. If circumstances make it necessary, the [The ForkTogether Project] can appoint others as signatories.

Signatories may sign documents on behalf of [The ForkTogether Project].


Elections for the positions of board members are held yearly in a general assembly on the [third Saturday in July]. There must be an announcement reminding members of the date of the election meeting at least two weeks beforehand,; this announcement must specify that elections will be taking place.


General Assembly

A general assembly is a regular gathering of the membership of the [The ForkTogether Project], where every member can be updated on, and have a say on what [The ForkTogether Project] is doing.

The board decides the times and places of general assemblies. A general assembly must be announced to all members at least two weeks before it occurs. This announcement must include the list of points to be discussed at the meeting.

General Assemblies take the following format:

  • A formal declaration that the meeting has begun
  • A vote on whether the meeting was properly announced
  • A recording of members present (roll call)
  • An account of what has happened since the last assembly
  • An account of what we want to accomplish before the next assembly
  • Any other points
  • A formal declaration that the meeting has concluded

Extraordinary General Assembly

An extraordinary general assembly is a gathering of the membership of the [The ForkTogether Project], where every member can be updated on, and have a say on what [The ForkTogether Project] is doing. It is designed to be called by the board or members in case there is an issue that needs to be addressed before the next general assembly.

If the board or at least half of the members of [The ForkTogether Project] demand it, the board must call for an extraordinary general assembly. Extraordinary general assembly must be announced at least two weeks beforehand, and take place within six weeks of the vote for an extraordinary general assembly.

Only points that are included in the announcement can be discussed during an extraordinary general assembly.

Recall Assembly

A recall assembly is a gathering of the membership of the [The ForkTogether Project] for forcing a replacement of one or more members of the board.

If one third or more of the members, excluding members on the board, call for a recall assembly, one shall be assembled within two weeks time. During this assembly there will be discussion and a vote solely on recalling and replacing one or more members of the board.
